Who are we?

The IOW is an independent research institute of the Leibniz Association for which equal opportunities, family friendliness and work-life balance are very important. Our research focus is on the coastal and marginal seas, especially the Baltic Sea. The staff of the four sections Physical Oceanography and Instrumentation, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Geology works interdisciplinary within a joint research programme.

What will be your tasks?

Peatlands are able to store large quantities of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, but contribute to emissions if they are drained. The coastal fens of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have undergone major changes in recent decades as they have been drained and used for agriculture, but are now to be partially renaturalized. This project is dedicated to the former peatland areas, whose ecological condition is still poor and needs to be improved. Together with the Baltic Sea Foundation (Ostseestiftung) and the University of Greifswald, selected coastal polders are being wetted (reconnected to the Baltic Sea) and their development scientifically monitored in order to be able to assess the consequences of renaturation in the best possible way. The project at the IOW is investigating nitrogen emissions (nutrients, organic substances and microbial rates) with the aim of quantifying the best strategy for reducing emissions depending on local conditions. Nutrient concentrations and microbial rates are to be determined and material flows calculated. The findings will be incorporated into a renaturation strategy to be developed.

What do we expect from you?

Completed university degree and doctorate in a natural science subject, preferably with a focus on aquatic or marine work and a publication record appropriate to career status. Measurement of microbial turnover, nutrients, dissolved organic matter as well as organization of sampling on site and in coordination with partners. We expect the interpretation of scientific data sets as well as publication activity. Knowledge of measuring denitrification rates with stable isotopes and analyzing with a MIMS is an advantage, but not mandatory. Knowledge of the German language is required or has to be learned, a driver's license for passenger cars is required.

What does the IOW offer?

The IOW offers you a varied workplace in the immediate vicinity of the Baltic Sea (Work at sea) with flexible working arrangements, e.g. the possibility of working from home or remotely and a company health management. A very good infrastructure with modern laboratory and office equipment, including on our own research vessel, form the framework for the best working conditions.

For this particular work we dispose fully equipped labs with isotope ratio mass spectrometers (IRMS), membrane inlet mass spectrometer (MIMS), NanoSIMS and may more facilities are available for the research.

How do we promote equal opportunities?

Our job offers are aimed at all people regardless of their gender. Research benefits from a diverse working environment, which is why we have signed the Diversity Charter.

IOW aims to specifically promote women in areas where they are underrepresented. For this purpose, the institute has given itself a plan to promote equality (plan for the equal opportunities committee at the IOW) and has repeatedly been awarded the Total E-Quality award for its commitment (website TOTAL E-QUALITY e. V.) You can find an overview of our measures for equal opportunities and for improving the compatibility of work and family on our website.
