Master student (f/m/d) K 15 / 26 - #995924
Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V.
The Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung (IKZ) is a leading research institution in the field of science & technology as well as service & transfer of crystalline materials. Our goal is to enable solutions for pressing societal challenges (e.g. communication, artificial intelligence, climate protection, health, etc.) through modern electronic & photonic technologies. The work covers the entire spectrum from basic and applied research to pre-industrial development and is carried out in cooperation with national and international partners from universities, academies and industry. The institute is part of the Forschungsverbund Berlin (https://www.fv-berlin.de/) and a member of the Leibniz Association (https://www.leibniz-gemeinschaft.de). You can find more details on the institute webpage: https://www.ikz-berlin.de.
The Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung currently looking for a
Master student (m/f/d)
for the master thesis topic:
“Photoacoustics in functional materials”
Photoacoustics is a powerful technique for generating high-frequency sound waves in solid materials, with applications ranging from frequency filters in mobile phones to precision sensors. Our group has also pioneered a more exotic application — Active X-Ray Optics — which has been successfully commercialized through our spin-off company, TXproducts.
At the IKZ-DESY Joint Lab, we operate a unique experimental platform dedicated to photoacoustics research in solids. The setup can generate acoustic waves with frequencies reaching up to 1 THz and detect them with exceptional precision, allowing us to characterize the acoustic properties of materials, heterostructures, and device prototypes.
As part of your master's thesis, you will develop and implement a new measurement scheme that combines excitation of high frequency sound waves with high frequency-resolved detection. You will then apply this technique to investigate a number of heterostructures and device prototypes, contributing directly to cutting-edge research at the frontier of materials science and ultrafast acoustics.
The master thesis will be conducted at the IKZ-DESY JointLab at the DESY campus in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld.
Good to have:
- Experience with and affinity to optics and lasers.
- Knowledge of solid-state physics.
- Programming skills (preferably C and Python) and a working knowledge of AI tools.
The Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung actively supports a healthy work-life balance and is an equal opportunities employer. Female candidates are encouraged to apply and will be given preference if suitably qualified. Among equally qualified candidates, preference will be given to candidates with disabilities. IKZ promotes diversity. We welcome every qualified application, regardless of age, belief, disabilities, ethnic origin, gender, nationality, religion, or sexual orientation.
