At the Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures in Bremerhaven, we research and develop innovative solutions to strengthen the resilience of maritime infrastructures and make them adaptable, safe and sustainable. In close cooperation with partners from research, industry and other maritime security stakeholders, we combine technological innovation with practical expertise and offer you the opportunity to work on pioneering projects.

What To Expect

Maritime infrastructures sustain modern societies. Offshore wind farms supply us with clean electricity, our natural gas is delivered via LNG terminals and underwater pipelines, and a global network of undersea data cables ensures internet connectivity. However, these infrastructures are increasingly threatened by accidents, disasters and, not least, hybrid attacks - such as the cutting of data and electricity cables or the attack on the Nord Stream Pipeline in 2021.

The DLR Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures is a research and technology development organisation dedicated to maritime security. One of its main objectives is to protect maritime socio-technical infrastructures and their operations and to increase their resilience. It does so, among other things, by developing methods and technologies to secure maritime infrastructures against hybrid attacks and other threats from drones and vessels.

We are looking for motivated and dedicated candidates to support the development of methods to assess security systems in the maritime domain. In this exciting position, you will actively participate in pioneering research projects on surface and underwater security and make an important contribution to strengthening the security of maritime infrastructures.

Your tasks

• Review of existing approaches and methods in security research and their application and adaptation in the maritime environment.
• Develop approaches and methods for assessing the security status of maritime infrastructures.
• Creation of realistic attack scenarios for maritime infrastructures, taking into account existing protection and attack systems and technologies (e.g. underwater sensors and autonomous underwater vehicles).
• Presentation and publication of your research results in scientific journals and at national and international conferences.
• Opportunity to do a PhD.
  
  

Your profile

• Master's/University Diploma in engineering or a scientific/technical university degree (mathematics or physics) or other degree relevant to the position
• experience in system analysis
• good verbal and written communication skills in English
